The EU AI Act categorises AI systems into four distinct risk levels, each with specific regulatory implications:
Unacceptable Risk - AI systems that are incompatible with human rights and EU values (e.g., social scoring systems). AI systems that fall under this category are completely banned within the EU.
High Risk - AI Systems that pose threats to human safety (e.g., autonomous vehicles). AI systems that fall under this category are subject to stringent regulatory requirements.
Limited Risk - AI systems that pose minor risks but require full transparency to those engaging with AI systems (e.g., customer service chatbots). AI systems that fall under this category must provide full transparency and disclaimers to users.
Minimal/Low Risk - AI systems that pose little to no risk (e.g., spam filters). AI systems in this category are not subject to mandatory obligations.
Despite the UK leaving the European Union, UK companies that operate on a wider European scale will need need to apply inhibit this statute into their practices.
